From Pool Parties to Hiking Trails: The Right Shoes for Your Phoenix Labor Day Weekend!

Phoenix in September means one thing: the long Labor Day weekend is the perfect excuse for one last summer blast. Whether your plans involve a sizzling pool party in Scottsdale, an adventurous hike up Camelback Mountain, or a relaxed barbecue with friends, your feet are going to be working overtime.
As a Phoenix podiatrist, I see a lot of holiday-related foot injuries. The biggest culprit? The wrong footwear for the job. Don't let a sprained ankle or a painful blister ruin your weekend!! Here’s a guide to picking the perfect pair of shoes for whatever your Labor Day plans may be.
1. The Pool Party/Water Adventure- we’re thinking Scottsdale pool parties, tubing the Salt River, or a backyard get-together
The Wrong Shoe: That flimsy pair of dollar-store flip-flops.
- Why it's a problem: Flip-flops offer zero arch support and very little protection. The thin soles do little to shield your feet from scorching hot concrete or pool decks, which can reach over 150 degrees in the Phoenix sun. They also force your toes to grip to keep them on, which can lead to hammer toes, painful foot cramps, and plantar fasciitis.
The Right Shoe: A supportive water-friendly sandal.
- What to look for: Look for a sandal with a thick, cushioned sole and a molded footbed that provides arch support. The straps should be adjustable and secure, keeping the shoe firmly on your foot without you having to grip with your toes. Brands like Chaco, Teva, or even some of the more supportive Birkenstock with backstrap styles are great options. These will protect your soles from heat and sharp objects while providing the support your feet need.
2. The Hiking/Outdoor Adventure-we’re thinking a sunrise hike up Piestewa Peak, exploring the Desert Botanical Garden, or a walk through a local park
The Wrong Shoe: Your old, worn-out tennis shoes or, even worse, your casual sneakers.
- Why it's a problem: Old shoes lose their cushioning and support, leaving your feet vulnerable to impact. Casual sneakers don't have the necessary traction, ankle support, or rigid sole to navigate the uneven, rocky terrain of our local trails. This significantly increases your risk of a sprained ankle, a stress fracture, or heel pain from the constant pounding.
The Right Shoe: A sturdy, well-fitting hiking shoe or trail runner.
- What to look for: A proper hiking shoe will have a rigid sole to protect your foot from rocks and a lugged tread for superior traction. Ankle support is crucial for preventing sprains on rocky trails. Make sure your shoe is broken in before your hike—the last thing you want is a blister from a new pair! 3. The Relaxed Barbecue/Social Gathering: we’re thinking a neighborhood cookout, a backyard party, or a concert in the park
The Wrong Shoe: High heels without a platform or unsupportive, flimsy ballet flats that can be rolled into a burrito!
- Why it's a problem: While they might look great, high heels without a platform put immense pressure on the balls of your feet and can lead to bunion pain and heel pain. Flat shoes, while seemingly comfortable, often lack any form of arch support, which can lead to tired, aching feet after standing for long periods.
The Right Shoe: A comfortable and stylish slip-on sneaker or a supportive sandal.
- What to look for: The key here is comfort combined with a sturdy sole. A stylish sneaker with a cushioned insole provides excellent support. If you prefer sandals, choose one with a contoured footbed and a slight wedge heel to reduce pressure on the plantar fascia. Brands like Vionic, Birkenstock, Dansko, and On or other comfort-focused shoe companies offer great options that don’t sacrifice style.
