Warts

What are plantar warts?

Plantar warts are benign growths on the plantar region (sole) of your foot. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and are highly contagious. You can pass warts to other people and even transfer them to other parts of your body through touch.

What do warts look like?

Most plantar warts are no larger than a pencil eraser. They may be flat or can grow outward or inward. Warts that grow outward may feel like pebbles in your shoes.

Some plantar warts have a tiny black dot in the center, known as a seed. Clusters of plantar warts can cover large areas of your sole. Other warts resemble calluses. However, warts are painful when you pinch them, but calluses generally aren’t.

What is the risk of getting plantar warts?

The HPV that causes warts thrives in warm and moist conditions. You can get plantar warts by walking barefoot in areas like swimming pools, saunas, showers, and gyms. You’re more likely to get a wart if you have a cut or sore on the sole of your foot.

What are the treatments for warts?

Plantar warts usually resolve on their own over weeks to months. If they’re painful, cause you embarrassment, or don’t respond to over-the-counter treatments, Dr. Arya removes them in-office with treatments like:

  • Acid treatment
  • Cryotherapy
  • Minimally invasive excision

Both acid treatment and cryotherapy are fast, effective, and noninvasive treatments that minimize the risk for recurrent warts. You can return to your normal daily activities directly after treatment.

In addition, Dr. Arya provides you with an at-home regimen that can be followed after your procedure to ensure the problem is resolved. She diligently educates patients on how to avoid getting a wart in the first place.

What other skin conditions can be treated?

In addition to treating warts, any new skin lesion, bump, lump, or cyst on the skin should be addressed. Oftentimes patients with nagging or embarrassing skin and nail concerns will wait months, even years to seek treatment that can usuallty be quick and effective.

If you have any skin concerns, especially painful ones, Arya Foot & Ankle offers quick diagnostics which might include a biopsy or fluid analysis, and in office treatment to treat patient’s skin concerns swiftly.
